Welcome, adventurer.

You have arrived at the hints page for The Lost Treasure of John Augur.

Each hint section is designed to help with a specific part in your journey. We’ve broken the sections down into two clues, and a solution per document. Please be aware that there are spoilers ahead, particularly as you progress further with each hint.

Please note, if a specific item in your experience doesn’t have an associated clue below, then it is for narrative purposes only, and not integral to the puzzle.

If you are still struggling with a particular puzzle, once you have visited the hints, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] for further assistance.

HOW DO I BEGIN?

CLUE 1

There’s a letter here, from Drew at Kelsey Marine Salvage. We recommend you read through this first.

CLUE 2

Once you’ve read through Drew’s letter, acquaint yourself with all the documents in the envelope. There’s an excerpt from Kelsey’s diary, a business card, a treasure map, a scan of a book, and a scrap of paper. There’s a puzzle in here just waiting to be solved.

FIRST ENVELOPE

THE PIRATE MAP

CLUE 1

A curious map, filled with pirate symbols. Have you seen these symbols anywhere else in this envelope?

CLUE 2

To plot your route around this map you’ll need more than just a series of symbols to follow. You’ll need a whip’s wheel to control your path.

SOLUTION

See ‘Solving the Pirate’s Code’ for a full walk through.

THE CODED MESSAGE

CLUE 1

Pirates often used strings of symbols to encode directions around a map. That, place names too. But how can these symbols reveal a place name?

CLUE 2

To decipher the coded message, you’ll need a map to plot your route, but that’s not all. You’ll also need a tool to convert these symbols into letters. Is there anything that looks like it could help with that in this envelope?

SOLUTION

See ‘Solving the Pirate’s Code’ for a full walk through.

THE SCANNED BOOK

CLUE 1

Read the text carefully and look out for any instructions of what to do. Remember, you’ll have to use the book in conjunction with the map and the pirate code in order to solve it.

CLUE 2

The book describes cutting out the pirate wheel, and using the square in the middle to overlay onto a pirate map as you plot your directions. Don’t forget to make a note of the letters you collect along the way.

SOLUTION

See ‘Solving the Pirate’s Code’ for a full walk through.

SOLVING THE PIRATE'S CODE

CLUE 1

To solve the pirate’s code, you’ll need the scrap of paper, the pirate map, and the scan from the book.

CLUE 2

Codes like these were used by pirates for two reasons - to plot a course, and to encode secret locations. Try cutting out the pirate’s wheel from the scanned paper, lining up the square with the map grid, and plotting a course. As you go, make a note of the letters you find.

SOLUTION

Using the ship’s wheel from the scan and the map, follow the route on the pirate’s wheel. With each change of direction, a new letter can be found around the edges of the wheel. Make a note of each of them as you plot the route, and you’ll spell out the letters:

FILIPINAS

This is the name that they would have used at the time for the country “The Philippines”. It looks like your next stop is the Philippines.

THE BUNDLE OF PAPER

THE EIGHT MAP FRAGMENTS

CLUE 1

These map fragments have some symbols on them. Have you seen those symbols elsewhere?

CLUE 2

Use the amulet with the map fragments to match the symbols. Only one spot on each fragment will align with the symbols on the amulet. Don’t forget to mark the spot of the centre hole each time, as it may come in handy when you need to find the ‘real-world’ counterpart locations on the large map.

SOLUTION

The amulet lines up perfectly in one specific location on each map fragment. Here are the locations:

THE LARGE MAP

CLUE 1

An enormous map of the Philippines. Now, what did Kelsey say in her diary again? The eight fragments are of the same region, but they don’t quite match up. If you had a specific point of reference - a single mark on the map, it would be easy to match up the fragments to the large map.

CLUE 2

This area of the Philippines is exactly the same as the 8 pirate map fragments. In fact, if you look really closely, you should be able to match real-world locations on the map with landmarks and coastlines on the pirate copies.

If you’ve solved the amulet and the map fragments puzzle, you’ll have a specific point on each fragment to reference. Mark these points on your map.

SOLUTION

Each of the 8 map fragments can be plotted on the real Philippines map. For now, this is all you need to do.

THE SEALED CRATE

THE SCRIMSHAW

CLUE 1

Your main goal here is to solve the riddle, but this scrimshaw may also come in handy. In particular, the side with the X and the eagle at the top. As you follow the riddle, look closely at it.

SOLUTION

For the full walkthrough, see “The Message in a Bottle”

THE MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE

CLUE 1

It’s a riddle. At first glance, it may not look relevant to the mystery at hand, but look a little closer. The Frenchwoman, could that be Philippa Latour? And the others, they sound familiar.

CLUE 2

The riddle references the members of the consortium, but more specifically it’s plotting lines between the members. Remember the map? You marked points on it from your 8 map fragments. Some of those points came from the Loup de Vagues maps, some from the Long Wu, and so on.

If you need a little hint, the scrimshaw may help point you in the right direction.

SOLUTION

Following the riddle (and the scrimshaw for reference), you’ll need to draw a line between the two locations shown for each pair of fragments. Second, draw a line starting from the intersection of the French and Arabic lines that passes through the intersection of the Spanish and Chinese lines. The line’s total length is 12 inches. At the end of that line is Taal Island, where your next stop is.

This image should match very closely with the illustration on the scrimshaw, beneath the X.

THE FINAL ENVELOPE

THE SCRIMSHAW

CLUE 1

You arrive at Taal Island, and there’s something about it’s distinctive shape that makes you feel like you’ve seen it before.

CLUE 2

The map of Taal Island matches closely with the island etched on the scrimshaw. What’s more, the scrimshaw seems to be showing an exact pathway around the island. If you follow it, you’ll get to the treasure. But there’s more than what meets the eye here. If someone had come before you and wanted to send you a coded message, how might they do it?

SOLUTION

Use the scrimshaw to plot your path around the island on the travel brochure. Then, use your path to uncover the secret message - the password for Kelsey’s email!

THE TRAVEL BROCHURE

CLUE 1

Taal Island is big, you’ll need a map to acquaint yourself with the lay of the land. It’s a good job there’s a map on this travel brochure. Speaking of maps, there’s another map on the scrimshaw, and Kelsey mentions a map from ‘several weeks ago’. Perhaps that’s how she’s coded her message?

CLUE 2

Trace the map on the scrimshaw on the brochure, stopping at each labelled point along the way. Each of those points bears a resemblance to the symbols on the very first pirate map you used. Perhaps there’s a new coded message here - starting with “Striped Snake”.

SOLUTION

Use the map to plot a route around the island, from “Striped Snake” to “Mermaid” to “Anchor” to “Octopus” to “Anchor” to Shell”.

Go back to the original pirate map, and using the ship’s wheel, plot these points and make a note of the password “LAPIS”

KELSEY'S EMAIL PASSWORD

CLUE 1

Kelsey has hidden the password to her email very carefully. You’ll need to use the brochure, the scrimshaw, and the pirate map and ship’s wheel from the very beginning of your adventure.

Go back to the original pirate map, and using the ship’s wheel, plot these points and make a note of the password “LAPIS”.

HOW DO I SOLVE THE GAME?

WARNING - FULL WALKTHROUGH INSIDE

The following is a complete walkthrough of every puzzle in the game. Proceed with caution.

  1. First, use the ship’s wheel, and the pirate map to decode the secret message. Cut out, and place the wheel over the map - then follow the directions from the code and make a note of the letters you read in each direction. The solution is “FILIPINAS”, or The Philippines, in English.

  2. Secondly, use the amulet with the 8 map fragments to find the locations on each where the amulet symbols perfectly match up. Plot this point on each of the 8 fragments. Then, using the large Philippines map, plot these points on their real-world counterparts.

  3. Solve the riddle (use the scrimshaw to help) to draw lines between different points on the map, in order to create a large symbol on the map. Then, draw a line from the two intersections. Where the points ‘end’ is the final location, TAAL ISLAND.

  4. At Taal, use the scrimshaw and the travel brochure to plot a route across the island to the final destination. Kelsey has encoded the password to her email in this route. Use the very first pirate map to decode it into a password, “LAPIS”.

… Wait, is that the end? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

If there’s anything you missed in the game, now is the time to go back over it and see if it reveals anything new.
